DETROIT – As the auction for the two Cadillac design-inspired custom motorcycles from the “American Chopper” series comes to a close, one winner will be certain – CureDuchenne, the national non-profit dedicated to finding a cure for Duchenne, the most progressive and lethal form of muscular dystrophy.

The auction already has bids in excess of $150,000 for the two custom-built motorcycles. Bidding continues until the auction closes at 5:50 p.m. EDT on July 31. The auction proceeds will be added to more than $500,000 that Cadillac has helped the organization raise since last September.

Leveraging the iconic Cadillac brand equity, the Discovery Channel’s “American Chopper” series pit the highly competitive father-and-son duo Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr. in a contest to design and build the best Cadillac design-inspired chopper.

Over the months, the show has featured visits from Duchenne kids at the facilities of Orange County Choppers and Paul Jr. Designs, and the General Motors Technical Center, where the final choppers were unveiled last June.

“You guys captured all of the design cues we work so hard in the studio to create and you’ve put it together in a very expressive way,” GM Vice President of Global Product Design Ed Welburn said at the unveiling. “The fact that they both look very different but are both very obviously Cadillac-inspired is very cool because it shows the breadth of Cadillac design.”

Cadillac’s partnership with CureDuchenne began in September 2010 in preparation for Super Bowl XLV. Cadillac donated ad space during the latter part of the NFL and college football seasons and auctioned Super Bowl tickets to raise nearly $500,000 to benefit CureDuchenne. That was followed by a Cadillac-sponsored auction and satellite radio ad campaign with Justin Bieber.

“Cadillac’s support has been nothing short of incredible,” said Debra Miller, president and CEO of CureDuchenne. “They have put CureDuchenne on the national radar in this country and that has helped mobilize a volunteer base that all want the same thing as we do – to find a cure for this devastating disease.”

Duchenne is the most prevalent form of muscular dystrophy, affecting one in every 3,500 male births around the world. Approximately 20,000 boys and young men are living with the disease in the United States, many of whom will not survive their teenage years.

The CureDuchenne organization directs its resources to peer-reviewed research programs that have greatest potential to provide treatments and cures for the current generation of Duchenne boys.

“Their organization has an entrepreneurial spirit that Cadillac is drawn to as a brand,” said Don Butler, vice president for Cadillac marketing.”They are not afraid to create their own path of innovation toward new solutions and technologies.”

Paul Teutul Sr.’s Cadillac-inspired chopper features a 160-hp diamond-cut and polished S&S wedge motor, large Brembo brakes, an angular frame, handlebars and lighting, and a centered rear exhaust similar to the CTS Coupe. The bike also features other Cadillac design cues, including a V-Series mesh tank area (containing a nitrous-oxide system), V-series badges and a CTS clock on the center tank.

“The wheels, lights, grilles are identical to the car,” Paul Sr. said during the unveiling. “Because the CTS-V has a 560-hp supercharged engine, we made the air cleaner into a ‘super-charged’ intake and added fuel injection.”

By contrast, Paul Jr.’s chopper has a more fluid design, blending curves around angular chevron design accents, side pipes and black diamond paint with Cadillac V-Series insignia. It also has a Crazy Horse motor, air suspension, large yellow V-inspired brake calipers, and taillights and trunk badges from a CTS sedan on the wide rear fender.

“When we were asked to build a bike for Cadillac, we immediately gravitated toward the CTS-V. It’s exactly what we do with motorcycles” said Paul Jr. “The CTS-V has the lines, the power, the looks, so a lot of our design cues were pulled from the CTS-V.”

Paul Jr.’s cycle is the favorite among fans with more than 138,000 members joining his Facebook page and bids for his chopper topping $110,000. Bids for Paul Sr.’s chopper have topped $50,000 with almost 10,000 Facebook members.

About CureDuchenne

CureDuchenne, a national nonprofit organization located in Newport Beach, Calif., is gaining international attention for its efforts to raise funds and awareness for Duchenne – a devastating and lethal muscle disease in children. One in every 3,500 male births results in a child being afflicted with the disease. Over 300,000 boys and young men are living with the disease worldwide, and many will not survive their teenage years.

Vyrus proposes a technologically advanced motorcycle with the intent of racing in the Moto 2 category.

Teams that use this machine in national and international competitions can count upon the Vyrus research and development department to develop and assist them at the highest possible level due to 25 years of racing experience.

Here it is from horse’s mouth!

Our objective is to build the bike to beat!

The Vyrus 986 M2 will be produced in three different versions this spring 2011:

1.	VYRUS 986 M2 FACTORY is a new bike that the Italian based company presented at the Motor Bike Expo, an interpretation of a Moto2 machine according to Vyrus. 135 kg for 136 hp, lightness and rideability, power and control, the ingredients of the most innovative motorcycle ever produced.

Many are technological solutions that give it it’s very own special character; hydraulic steering, upside down “Omega” frame, double link front and rear suspension, monocoque structural bodywork, low pressure aerodynamic cooling, ground breaking styling and the whole dressed with a sprinkling of the very best accessories like Marchesini forged wheels, Brembo brakes and Zard exhaust just to mention some of them.

The steering is controlled by a double action piston (VSS Vyrus Steering System) housed behind the steering head which transmits the movement to a hydraulic ram (with balanced movement on both sides) placed under the front swingarm. The movement is precise and can be damped by the system by simply reducing the cross sectional area of the oil flow as in a conventional steering damper. The hub center steering, that has distinguished Vyrus bikes for over a decade, works perfectly in this new bike. The system gives great stability and therefore security while braking due to its “anti dive” characteristics, it limits the weight transfer keeping a much more neutral weight distribution between front and rear wheels.

The frame is made of two “Omega” arms milled from solid billet Ergal (aeronautical aluminum alloy). These two spars are bolted to the engine and hold both front and rear swingarms as well as the suspension mounting points. This is the key element of the vehicle. The foot pegs, radiators and funnel, bodywork and engine are all attached to this inverted “Omega” frame.

The suspension is made up of two symmetrical push rods on each side of the swingarms that push two balancer compressing both the shock absorber. This gives a very compact and light system. The push rods and rockers can both be change very easily allowing the suspension to be setup and “tailored” to a riders demands very quickly. This mechanism distributes the forces equally and symmetrically, reducing the torsional forces present in other motorcycle swingarms, the weight and size of these are therefore significantly reduced.

The shock absorbers are specifically built pneumatic Double System units, built entirely from aluminum, that are adjustable for both high and low speed compression and rebound damping. More traditional Ohlins shocks are also available.

The aerodynamics have been studied extensively in complex simulations with fluid dynamic software and will see the use of hours in the wind tunnel to optimize the shapes. The aim of achieving a high coefficient of penetration to improve straight-line speed was achieved without compromising the handling of the vehicle in fast and sudden changes of direction at high velocity. The shape of the front is very pointed, both the top fairing and the lower fairing, incorporated in the tank, reduce the turbulences at high speeds. In addition, the cooling system uses radiators placed in a “V” position under the motor that benefit from the faster (therefore lower pressure) external flow to extract more and more hot air from them as the speed increases, thanks to two aerodynamic pockets that can be trimmed depending on the circuit.

The courage to explore new shapes and volumes characterizes the Design.

The original idea of Yutaka Igarashi with the Vyrus team gave life to an extremely rational and well balanced motorcycle. Sam Matthews (former CRC, MV F4) took the ideas and turned them into reality. The body of the bike consists of one self supporting unit that is both tank and fairing, an absolute revolution.

The exhaust system, that uses a traditional 4 into 2 into 1 configuration, ends with a twin nozzle silencer integrated in a mudguard placed under the seat just behind the motor. It is very well protected and does not hinder the rear suspension and represents an innovation in the exhaust pipe world that has not seen new ground breaking solutions from some time. The tubes can be traditional steel or titanium, the silencer has steel internals with a carbon fiber outer.

The wheels are high quality forged aluminum or magnesium alloy Marchesini racing items. They are refined, elegant and super light.

The brakes are Brembos and vary depending on the version of 986. For the racing version we use the famous GP4-RR calipers, that are used on MotoGP bikes, that bite 310mm T-Drive brake disks. At the rear there is a GP-R34 caliper and 220mm disk.

There are Dunlop racing tires on the Moto2 bike and Pirellis on the road version.

Ever since BMW Motorrad presented the concept study Concept 6 in autumn 2009, the new 6-cylinder in-line engine installed in it has caught the imagination of many motorcycle fans. For over seven decades now, 6-cylinder in-line engines have stood for fascinating engine technology in automobiles at BMW more than with any other brand. With the new K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL, BMW motorcycles are now available for the first time with a 6-cylinder in-line power unit developed in-house. The two touring motorcycles have a supreme, impressive and equally distinctive appearance, creating a desire to travel at first sight.

Riding dynamics, long-distance suitability and comfort.

For decades, 6-cylinder in-line engines have exercised a special fascination. In addition to their perfect running smoothness they also offer supreme output and torque, giving the rider powerful emotional impressions.

In addition to safety, equipment and comfort, prestige and dynamic performance are the key criteria for a supreme touring bike. With the most compact in-line 6-cylinder engine in serial motorcycle production to date, the K 1600 GT and the K 1600 GTL penetrate a whole new dimension in terms of riding properties, long-distance suitability and comfort. They combine maximum agility and riding dynamics with a luxurious overall package. With an engine output of 118 kW (160 bhp) and a maximum torque of 175 Newton metres (129 Lb. ft.), their 6-cylinder engine provides superb propulsion in all conditions.

Lightest and most compact serial production 6-cylinder in-line engine in a motorcycle > 1000 cc.

Previously, the in-line arrangement of six cylinders resulted in either very long or very wide constructions, depending on the installation position, which led to drawbacks in terms of chassis geometry, weight distribution and centre of gravity. This where the K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL break new ground.

Weighing 226 pounds, the engine is by far the lightest serially produced 6-cylinder in-line engine for motorcycles in the class > 1000 cc. What is more, the engine is significantly narrower in construction width than all other 6-cylinder in-line motorcycles in serial production to date. This extremely compact construction and reduced width was achieved in particular by means of a cylinder bore of 72 millimetres in conjunction with a spacing of just 5 millimetres between the cylinder the cylinder sleeves.

Both the low engine weight and the consistent lightweight construction of the vehicle as a whole contribute to the low weight of the vehicle. At 703 lbs. (K 1600 GT without panniers) and 767 lbs. (K 1600 GTL with panniers and topcase) the new touring bikes are in the lower range of the segment.

Three modes to choose from and DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) for maximum safety when accelerating.

The rider of the K 1600 models has three different engine characteristics directly available at the press of a button at the right-hand end of the handlebars so as to be able to adapt to different uses such as touring on the road, riding on wet surfaces and sporty, dynamic motorcycling – the modes “Rain”, “Road” and “Dynamic”. Available as a factory option, the traction control function DTC is combined individually with the different modes, fully harmonised with them so as to provide maximum riding safety.

E-gas.

The control of the central throttle valve with a diameter of 52 millimetres is effected via an e-gas, also known as a ride-by-wire system. The rider’s wishes are registered by means of a sensor in the accelerator twist grip. The engine control then adjusts the position of the throttle valve accordingly.

Chassis with ideal mass concentration for dynamic riding properties.

The essential chassis elements of the BMW K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL are the light alloy bridge-type frame, and the Duolever and Paralever for wheel control at front and rear. Because of the special requirements of a touring bike with a 6-cylinder engine, particular attention was paid to balancing the masses.

All in all, the interplay of chassis and engine position, together with the seating position of the rider, not only makes for a low overall centre of gravity with a very favourable concentration of masses, it also provides an ideally balanced wheel load distribution for excellent riding properties. The combination of ride stability, riding dynamics and lightness of handling in all riding and load conditions sets a new benchmark in the touring bike segment.

Electronic Suspension Adjustment ESA II for optimum adaptation to all uses and load states.

The new 6-cylinder touring bikes also benefit from the innovative Electronic Suspension Adjustment II (ESA II), which is offered as a factory option.

With this system, globally unique on the motorcycle market, the rider can conveniently press a button to electronically adapt not only the rebound damping properties of the front and rear spring strut but also the spring rest (“spring preload”) of the rear spring strut as well as the latter’s spring rate and therefore the “hardness” of the suspension. This makes for outstanding stability and impressive responsiveness in all load states.

The additional adaptation of the spring rate allows the damping settings “Sport, Normal, Comfort” to be spread widely in ESA II, giving them clearly perceptible characteristics during riding. So in “Sport” mode, the K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL are even more dynamic and precise and in “Comfort” mode they are more comfortable – while still retaining excellent stability.

Adaptive headlight – a world first for increased safety at night.

With the new BMW Motorrad touring bikes, the first ever “Adaptive Headlight” in the motorcycle sector is available as a factory option as a supplement to the standard xenon headlamp. In addition to standard pitch compensation, the light of the main headlamp is also balanced in relation to banking angle. This produces significantly improved illumination of the road when cornering and therefore an enormous increase in active riding safety.

Integrated operating concept with Multi-Controller, TFT color screen and menu guidance.

The instrument panel of the K 1600 models comprises two classic circular instruments for the speedometer and tachometer and a 5.7-inch TFT color display. The design of the information display is also completely new in the motorcycle field. Among other things, it enables the attractive presentation of text and graphics over several lines.

Another world first is the Multi-Controller as part of an integrated operating concept, first introduced in the BMW R 1200 RT at the end of 2009. In addition to audio system control, the K 1600 models also have a menu for operating the comfort functions and on-board computer.

Innovative design with outstanding wind and weather protection.

Particular attention was paid during development to the combination of innovative design, optimum wind and weather protection and the very highest level of functionality. A very good example of this is the electrically adjustable windshield with memory function.

The bike’s aerodynamic qualities in terms of reduced air swirl – especially in the pillion passenger area – were developed in sophisticated wind tunnel tests. But the windshield not only protects the rider and pillion passenger: it automatically returns to the starting position when the ignition is switched off, acting as an anti-theft system for the optionally available navigation system.

BMW K 1600 GT with active riding ergonomics for proactive touring.

The design of the ergonomic triangle from the position of the footrests, seat top and handlebars makes for a highly proactive seating position in the K 1600 GT, while still retaining a high level of long-distance comfort. The rider and pillion passenger enjoy a comfortable knee angle but the seating position is geared towards the front wheel for a dynamic riding style. The seat is height-adjustable in the rider area so that it can be adapted to individual needs.

The K 1600 GT is has a very extensive range of standard features consisting of xenon headlamps, heated grips and seat, cruise control and on-board computer. In conjunction with the supreme riding qualities of the new BMW Motorrad 6-cylinder engine, this motorcycle leaves nothing to be desired as far as the proactive touring rider is concerned.

BMW K 1600 GTL with very comfortable, relaxed ergonomics set-up for long trips with pillion passenger.

The luxurious touring bike BMW K 1600 GTL meets the very highest demands. Rider and pillion passenger benefit from the very relaxed, upright seating position as is especially appreciated over long distances. The ergonomic design is geared towards maximum comfort and derives from a single-section, dual level seat in conjunction with rider footrests which are further forward and lower, as well as handlebars which reach further backwards. The standard topcase rounds off the range of comfort features for the pillion passenger.

Like the K 1600 GT, the K 1600 GTL has a very extensive range of standard features consisting of xenon headlamps, heated grips and seat, cruise control and on-board computer. The overall impression of the fascinating 6-cylinder motorcycle in combination with a carefully conceived storage concept, a standard audio system and numerous design elements make the BMW K 1600 GTL the flagship model among the BMW Motorrad touring bikes.

Individual paint finish concepts adapted to the character of each bike.

As touring bikes, the new BMW K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL stand for a perfect synthesis of supremacy, dynamic performance and comfort. This is also reflected in the coloring of the two models.

In the K 1600 GT, the body colors of Light Grey metallic and Vermilion Red metallic create a fascinating contrast with the frame and wheels in Ostra Grey and the engine in Platinum metallic matt. The coloring especially highlights the bike’s technical components. The lines are concentrated and give the motorcycle a marked sense of agility.

With its emphasis on comfort and equipment, the K 1600 GTL has a powerful presence and elegance with elongated lines. This was achieved by means of a harmonious interaction between body colors and the coloring of the engine and chassis components. Here, Mineral Silver metallic orRoyal Blue metallic 2 provide a perfect match for the Magnesium metallic matt of the painted frame and wheels. The engine in Platinum metallic matt ensures an appealing overall impression.

Munich. Winning the overall ranking in style, being victorious in two categories and scoring four more top ten positions in the reader’s vote „The best sports motorcycles 2010“ of PS (Das Sport-Motorrad Magazin) BMW Motorrad continues their success story. It was crowned with winning the title “Best motorcycle brand”.

“I’m glad to hear of the overwhelming victory of our new S 1000 RR in this vote focussed on sporty motorcycles. I would like to thank the readers of PS most sincerely for their votes. This reflects the enormous enthusiasm for our products.”, said Hendrik von Kuenheim, Head of BMW Motorrad, commenting on the result of the vote.

With BMW Motorrad represented in the category “Best sport motorcycle over 700 cc” with a 4-cylinder supersports bike for the first time, the new BMW S 1000 RR won this class at the first go, thereby underscoring its superior technical conception combining highest performance with Race ABS and Dynamic Traction Control DTC.

Honda developed the EV-neo, an electric scooter designed to provide the durability necessary for business use, envisioning a wide range of uses by businesses such as delivery services. Equipped with a lithium-ion battery and a brushless motor, EV-neo realizes excellent environmental performance with zero CO2 emissions in use. The battery is rechargeable using a household power source with attention given to the range per charge. Moreover, EV-neo provides performance equivalent to that of mass-market under-50cc gasoline engine motorcycles realizing a powerful ride even with cargo by leveraging the characteristics of a high-torque motor even at a low speed ride.

Under the key words of “quiet and clean” Honda held the world premier exhibition of the EV-neo concept model (under the name EVE-neo) at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show in 2009 as one of Honda’s new-generation personal mobility products which will contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society while transporting people and cargo. The mass-market model of EV-neo is currently under development.
